Q: How does the sun affect my eyes?
A: Just as it affects our skin, the sun can also do significant damage to the eyes. The damage is done by long term exposure to ultraviolet radiation given off by the sun. The white part of the eye, called the sclera, has very little natural protection. UV exposure over time will cause the white tissue to get thicker, more yellowed, and more bloodshot, which results in drier and less attractive eyes. Although we most typically see this unsightly damage in the eyes of older adults, the damage is a result of a lifetime of exposure starting in childhood. Cataracts and macular degeneration have also been linked to sun exposure. People who live in locations closer to the equator or who spend a lot of time outdoors will experience all of these health problems much sooner than everyone else. The best way to avoid sun damage in your eyes while outdoors is to wear a hat with a brim along the front and sunglasses that have 99% UV protection or better.
